While the Sun represents the Masculine energy; the Moon is Feminine, the nurturing and emotional side of us, it is the Goddess energy, that of the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone.
I love the Full Moon… I stand and stare at her up in the night sky, and a feeling of Love and Expansion always washes over me. She brings me back to a softer way of being, of being Open to Allowing and Receiving (instead of the masculine “pushing to get things done” type energy). And I feel like I want to take a deep breath and sigh, to release, to let go… which is what the energy of the Full Moon is about.
The Full Moon is the time to state that which we wish to release from our life as the Moon wanes down to the New Moon. It is a time for letting go, cleansing, releasing, making space and shedding old patterns of behaviour that no longer serve us.
Then the New Moon marks the beginning of a new cycle of energy as the Moon waxes up until the Full Moon. It is a creative cycle to plant the seeds of intention to manifest into our life what we desire, to make a fresh start, a time of optimism, faith and hope.
And then the cycle begins again…
Why put your crystals in the Full Moon light?
There are many different schools of thought on cleansing and re-tuning your crystals, and IMHO, none of them are completely right OR wrong. There is merit in all of them. It is about your intention and your particular circumstances, so go with what FEELS right for YOU.
My understanding is that all crystals have a repeating geometric pattern within their atoms (which is what makes them a crystal and not a stone or metal) and therefore their Dominant Oscillary Rate (DOR), or rate at which they vibrate is quite precise and doesn’t vary too much. However if you have been doing a lot of work with a crystal or maybe you dropped it or something, then it can become a little “out of tune” in a similar way to a guitar string when you have been playing the guitar a lot.
Left to their own devices, over time, a crystal will always return to its natural DOR. However, we can give them a helping hand. Just like you would take Vitamin C when you get a head cold, putting your crystals out in the moonlight gives them some nurturing TLC to help them back to their perfect natural state.
There are many other ways we can do this for crystals, but I’ll put that in another blog post sometime.
What do I do with my Crystals at the Full Moon?
I wait until the sun has passed over, as coloured crystals such as amethyst can fade in direct sunlight.
If the crystals are small I put them on a tray or in a bowl made from wood, ceramic or glass (not plastic) or on a larger stone outside so I don’t lose them in the grass. The larger ones I put directly on the grass. Remember, crystals came from the earth and I feel that they benefit greatly from being in contact with the earth from time to time. It is the same type of thing as Earthing or Grounding for us.
What if it is raining?
The energy of the moon will still be potent even if there are clouds. The moon is shining behind the clouds and the energy is still affecting us.
Do be careful if there is rain forecast or you are likely to get a heavy dew.
Crystals with a Moh’s hardness of 5 or less are not always safe in water and can be damaged, fall apart or dissolve. Some examples are calcite, selenite, malachite, desert rose or halite.
Metals such as pyrite, hematite or magnetite/lodestone will rust if they become wet.
Put the less water tolerant crystals on a window ledge inside your house, and you can put your crystal jewellery there too. The moon energy won’t be quite as strong, but it will still work.
When do I bring them back inside?
I like to have my crystals back inside quite early before the sun becomes too strong. A little sun-bake in the early morning can be good for them, however please remember that they grew underground and too much sun can be damaging for them.
How often do I need to put them out under the moon?
Again, I follow my intuition on this one.
The crystals that I use regularly in my Crystal Healing Sessions get put out each month, however others that may be in my Sacred Space or displayed around my home don’t need to go out each month. Once or twice a year is generally all they need. Just tune into them and see how you feel.
